Notes from the Dean

Dear Classical Families,
It looks as if spring is finally beginning in Northeastern Wisconsin! I know our students have enjoyed a few sunny recesses lately—hopefully there will be many more during the month of May.
Here are some important updates as we wind up the 2015-16 school year:
Knowledge-a-thon –KAT was a huge success again this year! Thank you for helping your children practice the questions and answers as well as gathering pledges. We appreciate your support. Many thanks are extended to our fabulous, hardworking KAT Committee chaired by Sheri Hartzheim. And thank you to all of you who volunteered to test the children on Friday’s KAT day.
MAP testing — MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) testing began on April 11th and will continue to about May 4th. All Classical students in grades 1 – 8 are tested each in math and grades 3 – 8 are also tested in reading. Please watch for MAP test results next month.
PALS – All Kindergarten – 2nd grade Wisconsin students are screened for phonics and literacy progress using the PALS (Phonological Awareness Literacy Screener) test. This test is administered in small groups and one-on-one with a teacher. Classical School uses this test in autumn and again in spring. The spring testing will begin around April 25th and will continue to about May 20th. Please watch for PALS results toward the end of the school year.
Staff Appreciation Week – During the week of May 2nd – 6th, we will be celebrating National Teacher Appreciation Week and will be honoring and celebrating all of our teaching and non-teaching staff. We appreciate our coordinator, Carli McDougal, and all of the work she has been doing to plan for the week. Classical School has such generous and gracious parents. Our staff appreciates all that you do to help our school and for each of them individually. Classical School is blessed with an amazing staff of professionals who work so hard each day to provide an excellent education for our students as well as a nurturing and caring environment in which our students thrive.
New Kindergartners – We will be welcoming our new 2016-2017 kindergartners on May 6th for kindergarten visitation and orientation at 9:00 a.m. The students will also have their kindergarten placement tests in math and reading on May 13th starting at 8:15 am.
Yearbooks – Yearbooks will go home at the end of the school day on Friday, May 30th. All school fines/fees need to be paid before your child will receive his/her yearbook. A huge thank you to Duyen Bagwell and her creative and hard-working student yearbook club. This year’s book is better than ever!
7th/8th Grade Awards Program and 8th Grade Graduation – We will be graduating our fifteenth group of 8th graders this school year! The 8th grade graduation will be held on the evening of Tuesday, May 31st, following the 7th and 8th grade award program which will begin at 7:00pm in the Forum. This event is open to our full school so please feel free to join us, even if you do not have a 7th or 8th grade student. It is a lovely evening for the school.
Quarter 4 and Semester 2 Report Cards – Report cards for Quarter 4 and Semester 2 (elementary art, music, and P.E. and elementary personal skills) will be mailed home after the school year ends. Expect to see them in your mailbox the week of June 6th-10th. In keeping with our belief that “every educational minute matters” classroom instruction, skill groups, assignments, and grades will continue through the last Wednesday of the school year.
Kindergarten Graduation – Our kindergarten graduation program will be held from 1:45 – 2:45pm in the Forum on Wednesday, June 1st.
Last Day of School – School will end on Friday, June 3rd at 11:17 for all students grades K-8.
