The 2021-2022 school year marks Julie Brown’s eighteenth year as a band teacher in the Appleton Area School District. In addition to teaching beginning and middle school band at Classical School, she also teaches beginning band at McKinley Elementary School. She has also taught in the district at James Madison Middle School and Johnston, Horizons, Janet Berry, and Edison Elementary Schools.
Mrs. Brown earned her masters in music education degree from Northwestern University and also graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire with bachelor degrees in music education and music composition. She was awarded a Kohl Educational Fellowship in 2008 and was also published in Music Educators’ Journal, the national publication for National Association for Music Education (NAfME). She has served as a member of the Wisconsin Student-Centered Learning Action Research Group and has presented at a variety of state and national conventions and conferences on the subject of student-centered learning. Mrs. Brown has also served as the Wisconsin State Band Chair on the state Wisconsin Music Educators Association (WMEA) Council and regularly contributed to that organization’s publication, Wisconsin School Musician. Mrs. Brown was published as a composer through Alliance Publications. Her original work for concert band, “Always Gold” is available via the Alliance Publications website, as well as a wide variety of other online sources!
In February 2020, Mrs. Brown served as guest conductor for the Northeastern Conference Middle Level Honor Band. Prior to AASD, Mrs. Brown was in two smaller districts where she taught band to students in grades 5-12. In her free time, she enjoys travelling and going on adventures with her family, being outdoors (hiking, swimming, golfing, and kayaking in the summer, and skiing and sledding in the winter), reading, and writing and arranging music. She is also a trained volunteer at the NEW Zoo north of Green Bay and enjoys helping out and interacting with the animals when her schedule allows. Mrs. Brown lives in Appleton with her husband, Adam, their twelve-year-old son, Sebastian, their cats, Lily and Lyra, and Sebastian’s leopard gecko, Snowball.
