AASD Programs & Services Committee Meeting

Great news! The AASD Programs & Services Committee has agreed to include our request for a School of Rhetoric (“SOR”) as an Item of Consideration at its upcoming meeting on Thursday, April 30th. We are waiting for confirmation on the time and place, but assume we will be a part of their 8:00 a.m. meeting at the Scullen Center in downtown Appleton.
Why is this great news? The SOR is the final step in the 3-step classical model, which includes 1) School of Grammar (grades K-6), 2) School of Logic (grades 7-9), and 3) School of Rhetoric (grades 10-12). Our current program ends at Grade 8. In this final stage, classical learners discover how to apply, communicate and debate all they have learned in the earlier grades.
NOTE: This is a big hurdle to jump, as the Programs & Services Committee will vote, up or down, on whether to approve the SOR and make a recommendation to the AASD Board to amend our charter to allow for this final stage.
We need your support!
* PLEASE JOIN US for an informative presentation by Dr. Christopher Perrin, an author and consultant specializing in classical education, on Tuesday, April 21st from 6:30-8:00 p.m. in the Classical School forum. He will help Classical School families and community members to better understand the virtues of a classical education.. There will be an opportunity for interactive Q&A following his presentation. Invite your friends and family!
* PLEASE JOIN US at the Programs & Services Committee meeting on Thursday, April 30th at 8:00 a.m. at the Scullen Center in downtown Appleton. (The Scullen Center’s address is 122 E. College Ave. Suite 1A, but you will want to enter the City Center through the Washington St. entrance). The AASD Board needs to understand that this educational opportunity is being requested by Classical School families and community members. Please share this with family and friends and encourage them to attend as well!
* PLEASE JOIN US IN PERSON OR IN WRITING if you are a Classical School alumnus. Consider offering a testimonial to the Committee on April 30th describing the value of your classical education and how your educational experience changed upon leaving Classical School.
* PLEASE JOIN US if you are an interested parent of a student at any school in the Appleton area. Consider speaking to the Committee about why you support the SOR.
Whether your interest in classical education ends at 8th grade or starts at 9th, families in the AASD school community will greatly benefit from the establishment of a SOR. The Classical School SOR will be another great option alongside our traditional public schools and high school charters. Thank you for your support!
